FN FAL vs M14 (M1a) vs G3 (HK91)

I have owned and shot all three rifle types (FN, M1A and HK).  I have shot all three in a ‘military or fighting’ type environment.  This differs greatly from ‘range shooting’ – and my...

Re: FN FAL vs M14 (M1a) vs G3 (HK91)

The FN FAL and the M14 in factory trim both have 21" tubes - the G3 (HK91) has an 18" tube.Although (and this won't surprise you Klick - but you won't like it) I have since SHORTENED my FN FAL barrel...

Boy I handled a CETME last night for the first time. Felt nice and light but still strong and shouldered reasonable well but man o man TI, those controls are just terrible. Completely non intuitive,...

I don't know, some day you may hear from out of the bushes: "naaa naaa! Sixteen inch barrel! Didn't hurt!" !!!!! So why not 18"?? I would have disliked that less better.

Not a believer in long barrels.  The most highly respected *actual* SNIPER school in the world outside the USMC is GPS Defense.  It is owned/ran by former USMC Snipers.  In fact the guy that wrote the...

Not a believer in short barrels, 16" inch is short. Remember when 20" was considered a carbine? (pre-AR/AK) Even the Winchester carbines, the carbines to define all carbines, had 19" and 20" tubes on...

Re: FN FAL vs M14 (M1a) vs G3 (HK91)

In the balance of ballistics and handling/portability "technology" advances have bridged the gap through time. "out dated" tech now was at one time state of the art. Today if the ballistics hold up...

Re: FN FAL vs M14 (M1a) vs G3 (HK91)

A 20" barrel, or an 18", will always outperform a 16 or 14" barrel, every time. You can't change the laws of physics, or fool mother nature. You can say "it does not matter", but more velocity is more...

Yeah - the reason that barrels have been getting progressively shorter is because the advances in propellant powders.  And they are getting shorter for very valid reasons.Regarding the laws of physics...

Great Thread TI I have a few friends who have properly installed pistol grips on fiberglass M14 stocks and it truly transforms them to a higher level of ergonomics as does the pricey E2 stock, they...

Man, debating with Iron is kind of like whizzing into the wind. However, there's one more point I'd like to make, although clutching at straws it is. Even if a timer shows that a 16" barrel is faster,...

Klick,At the ranges where the difference in "handling" speed could save your life - the difference in velocity won't matter.  Having been on a number of two way ranges - I would much rather sacrifice...

Yes TI it does help. As I try to expand out past 100, you again remind me the importance of devoting the majority of my time within those limits and not to abandon them completely. Even with a semi...

I understand your point, and in fact I don't doubt that you are right. Just saying that if we can split hairs on a tenth or so of a second as far as handling goes, then I don't think we can totally...

Re: FN FAL vs M14 (M1a) vs G3 (HK91)

And there is MUCH to say about confidence in one's firearm.  I would rather you have a 48" barrel and have alot of confidence (through training) in your choice than to have a 16" barrel and no...

Re: FN FAL vs M14 (M1a) vs G3 (HK91)

A couple items are missed in regards to barrel length: 1) Higher velocity = less bullet drop in a given distance 2) Higher velocity = greater distance to subsonic transition where bullet destablizes...

Re: FN FAL vs M14 (M1a) vs G3 (HK91)

Yes, shorter stiffer barrels are generally more accurate due to less barrel vibration/flex. But that's at a cost to velocity. IMO, that velocity increase does lead to more precise shooting at distance...
